We’re in our 5th year sourcing from the Ureña‑Rojas family in Costa Rica—and El Mango has quickly become one of the most compelling corners of their farm. Last year was our first time purchasing from this plot; this year’s harvest deepens our sense of what makes it special.
El Mango sits at 1,500 meters and spans 8 hectares, tucked beside the Las Torres section of the farm. It’s named for the handful of mango trees scattered across the land—an uncommon sight at this elevation, but here they offer soft, dappled shade to the coffee below and give the plot its quiet, slightly wild character.
This is also where it all began for Don Régulo, who planted his first coffee trees here at just 18 years old. Decades later, the farm is still run with the same long‑view mindset: intentional shade management, soil‑first fertilization guided by annual analysis, limited herbicide use, protected water sources, and fruit trees planted to support biodiversity. It’s agriculture built on stewardship rather than extraction.
The Ureña family continues to lean into honey and natural processing. Not only for the expressive fruit character it brings to the cup, but for the way it conserves water and reduces environmental impact. It’s a sustainable approach that consistently produces coffees that are vibrant and super fruity
